Gemological Institute Of America
The Gemmological Institute of America (GIA) is a non-profit institute dedicated to research and education in the field of gemmology and jewellery arts. Founded in 1931, GIA’s mission is to protect all buyers and sellers of gemstones by setting and maintaining the standards used to evaluate gemstone quality. The institute does so through research, gem identification and diamond grading services and a variety of educational programs.
In the 1940s, GIA established the “4 Cs” (Cut, Carat, Clarity and Colour) and the International Diamond Grading System™. GIA has been serving the Indian gem and jewellery industry since 2004 when it first opened its Mumbai campus, and four years later, a State-of-the-Art grading laboratory in the same location.
